by Brenda Bell and Michael Sgouros
Tico Tales, an original musical by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell, first opened Off-Broadway on July 10, 2012 as part of free summer family theatre at the Players Theatre located at 115 MacDougal Street, in the West Village of NYC. Revivals of Tico Tales also appeared at the Players Theatre in 2014 after touring internationally in Costa Rica.
Tico Tales, is a musical adaptation of traditional Costa Rican folk tales. The Michael and Brenda chose this piece after bringing their production of “A Christmas Carol” to Costa Rica in December of 2011. Inspired by the beauty of the nature, the warmth of the people and the rhythms of their community, Sgouros and Bell returned to New York excited to share a theatre piece that embodies this rich culture.
Tico Tales is a magical journey to Costa Rica through storytelling, dance and music. Enter the rain forest as the rhymes and legends of an ancient culture sweep you away to a long-forgotten land. Hear the call of the beautiful Quetzal bird, stump your foot as the cast of six actors and two musicians play a drumming tale, sneak a peek into a traditional tribal dance while the “little devils” chase away the bull and celebrate love with the Indian princess Cira as she is transformed into a volcano.
This show will captivate your heart and make your heart beat to a new, but ancient drum!
